About ARDMS, Sonography Canada & CCI

About ARDMS

ARDMS is the credentialing body associated with all Diagnostic Ultrasound studies including Echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound) and Vascular Ultrasound.

ARDMS awards the following three credentials:

• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)
• Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)
• Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)

The ARDMS does not credential in EKG, Stress, or Holter Monitoring.

RDCS versus RCS Credential

The RDCS credential is awarded by the ARDMS. The RCS credential is awarded by CCI. Both credentials are accepted credentials in the field of cardiac ultrasound.

About Sonography Canada

Sonography Canada administers examinations for certification in diagnostic medical sonography. Sonography Canada is also the national voice for diagnostic medical sonographers in Canada.

There are two pathways available for obtaining Sonography Canada credentials.

1. To be eligible to take Sonography Canada examinations, the student is a graduate of an accredited Canadian school.

OR

2. Applicants may apply for Sonography Canada credentials if they are internationally credentialed (ARDMS, CCI) or are trained medical professionals from outside Canada.

Many Canadians also write the American (ARDMS) Registry exams.

About CCI

CCI administers certification examinations to health care professionals in Invasive (Cardiac Catherization), Non-Invasive (Echocardiography), Vascular Ultrasound, and Cardiography (EKG, Stress, and Holter Monitoring).

CCI is the credentialing body devoted to Cardiovascular Technology and awards the following credentials:

• CCT - Certified Cardiographic Technician
• RCIS - Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist
• RCS - Registered Cardiac Sonographer
• RVS - Registered Vascular Specialist

RVT versus RVS Credential

The RVT credential is awarded by the ARDMS. The RVS credential is awarded by CCI. Both RVT and RVS are accepted credentials in the field of vascular ultrasound.
